Villains Club @ Rust basement 3. feb.

quick update this time.

I'll be playing a set at Copenhagen's best thursday club, villains club. i am scheduled to be playing the warm up set, so be sure to get down early.

Doors open at 23:00, entrance will be 40 kr.

Off Smack by Matias Samo & Løwenstein

Hailing from Denmarks second biggest city Aarhus, these boys have played every respected party and club in Denmark and then some in the rest of Europe. They released their first 12-inch this summer and now they’re mixing for the SmackCast.

Having performed at places like Paradiso (Amsterdam), The Egg (London), Factory (Birmingham), Culture Box (Copenhagen), Berghain-Kantine and Villa (Berlin), Plano B – Porto and Villa (Oslo) these guys are not what you would call unexperienced. Not only are Matias Samo & Løwenstein dj’s. They’re also part of one of Denmark’s most loved club events called LOCO. LOCO has done collaboratory clubnights with with Culture Box, Tartelet Records,Echocord Records and of course their own parties in Aarhus. These great parties with very high quality bookings led to LOCO being voted the best Danish club in 2008 by the well respected Danish magazine Cover. On top of all that Matias Samo & Løwenstein released their first EP “Forward Push” on Kina Music in May 2010.

What have the two of you been up to lately?

Recently we’ve had a lot of fun. We spend the all of August in Berlin. We did some gigs and some partying. Besides that we are working on some music and a new club project in our hometown.

Could you tell us something about the mix?

The mix is a blend of new stuff and stuff from before we had even touched a turntable. From bootlegs to big labels. We like to blend old and new stuff when we play so it semt fitting to do that for this mix as well. It’s kind of an attemt at giving a sense of how we play. Just fitted in to 60 minutes. Even though it was pretty tough to do.

What are your plans for the future?

Right now we’re spending a lot of time experimenting in the home studio. We have no new releases planned at the moment but we are working on it. In the future we are going to spend a lot of time producing and finding the setup we’re happy with. Other than that we’ll be starting up a new small wednesday club with some boys here in Aarhus. It will be devoted to the local guys playing and really should be a playground for all of us here. We’ll play nice music and have fun together – hopefully some people will pick up on the idea and come dancing as well.

Any interesting gigs coming up?

We had a lot of fun gigs during the summer and right now things are a bit quiet, but we’re working on some dates in Hamburg, Berlin and Copenhagen that hopefully will get confirmed soon. Germany has been a good country to us so far.

some new stuff.

Hi everyone (who hopefully still reads this blog)

I'm sorry for being so inactive, but i have just been so busy doing other things over the summer. I haven't dj'ed that much, so luckily i recently had the time to do a mix. It reflects a style that is sort of "new" to me. dub techno with inspirations from deep house and even some dubstep elements in it. I've gone away from the house, and dug into the techno. simply because it's what rocks my boat at the moment.

I have also continued to do the smackcast, and at the moment were on episode 24. We've also had our site redesigned, held a party at culture box, and done a co-lab with the danish festival Strøm. So that is mostly what has been keeping me busy.

Now, as i said i did a new mix. It's almost one and a half hour long, and im pretty satisfied with it. it features some of my all time favourites, while also including some new and fresh stuff. It is done almost entirely with vinyl, with only a couple of tracks from Traktor.

SMACKcast #016: Slick as beargrease - mixed by Sousa/Schmidt

I'm sorry for being so inactive lately. I have missed some radioshows and been slacking on themix tapes. I have simply had so much other stuff to do. 
Now, since i haven't done the things listed above, it doesn't mean that i'm not listening to and buying music anymore. I've got a whole bunch of records and even more mp3's.

With a weekly club every thursday, called VILLAINS CLUB, everybody in the Copenhagen nightlife knows the duo Sousa/Schmidt. Sousa/Schmidt hooked up in highschool and haven’t looked back ever since. Besides playing at VILLAINS CLUB, Sousa/Schmidt also play allover Copenhagen at places like Culture Box, Jolene, Vega etc. It is not only the Danes who are enjoying the talent of Sousa/Schmidt, as they also have been playing gigs outside of Denmark.

-Where does your interest for electronic music come from?
-Well it’s not the most exiting story, but here goes; Schmidt had been into techno from his early tweens. He was busy being geeky and “different” while the other kids were playing football. Sousa was oblivious until highschool where we met and Schmidt introduced him to electronic music.

-With the great success that Villians Club is and several big gigs in Copenhagen, what can we expect from you guys in the future?
-Indeed it’s been a pretty great year for us and for Villains Club. With Villains Club we need to think of ways of keeping it fresh and relevant, keep the flame burning. A Thursday club is hard work, you know! With Sousa/Schmidt we still have a long of way of gaining experience and finding our sound, though we think we’ve come far this year. We are still working on an EP and hope it’ll come out in…umm…well, out. Some joyous day.

-What inspired you, when you picked out the tracks for this mix?
-We too were stuck in a foreign country because of the ashcloud. Luckily for us we got a week extra in Granada, and perhaps choosing the tracks on the sunny balcony affected our choices. Do you guys feel the sunshine in the mix?
No, really, our thoughts behind this mix were not revolutionary. It’s been way too long since our last mixtape and so we thought we would just show the world what we are into these days. You can get a long way with that.

-Is this the style we will be hearing from you guys, at your gigs this summer?
-The gigs we played in Spain were very different from most of those we play in Copenhagen. We played a couple of 05-08 (spanish primetime) sets and they were all these banging-techno-hands-in-the-air sort of sets, so maybe we’ll add more techno sounds to our sets. Besides that, we don’t have any certain style planned for this summer.


-What’s the deal with the Carsten Jensen track?

-It’s just this track we picked up somewhere. Don’t know if it’s related to the author or the DJ?

SMACKcast #015. Spring Me Some / Dan M

For a while in Copenhagen, clubs and bars was frequently visited behind the decks by kind and joyful man by the name of Dan. He showed impeccable taste in all things house. But at some point he vanished. Some said he moved to the countryside; others said he was playing a parade of clubs in southern Germany. All of that might be true, but one thing was certain when the debut EP Lessons came out in 2009. He had spent a lot of time in the studio with James Braun kicking around drumsamples for the impressive tracks on that record. We asked Dan M to deliver a mix of music for us and answer a couple of questions…

You and James Braun got signed to Claude VonStrokes label, how did that come about?
The sexy collabo between me and Martin Høgild aka James Braun started one cold december night  in 2008 on the Lessons EP. We finished after a couple of sessions and plenty of coffee and then we just send it over to a few different labels. We had three labels showing interest but we ended up signing the ep with Mothership.

So what music is coming out from you in the nearest future?

Next release from me will either be a solo ep or the one i’m working on with James Braun right now. Depends on wich one gets finished first really. No labels mentioned yet.

You made a mix for us, where did you mix it and what’s in it?

The mix was done in my bedroom on a late night in April. I always get very ambitious when i’m planning to do a new mix thinking that its gonna be the craziest I ever did. Then when I get down to the action I just end up saying fuck it and then push play on my cdj 800s. In the mix is some news and some “older” ones and the mix also includes my latest remix made with my buddy from Berlin Marc Schneider out on New Kanada. Basically I just went Deep. Check the tracklist and get digging. Some hot shit in there…

Promo mix april 2010 - Let's get deep

I've recorded and uploaded a new mix to soundcloud. I am quite satisfied with it, especially the choice of tracks. The mix is much more locked genre-wise, it doesn't feature both uptempo techno and deep house. Instead it's a blend of deep house, with a twist of techno.
Anyway, i would advise you to have a listen, because i'm not good at transforming my mixes into words.

I'm very satisfied with it, it starts out very deep and techy, and ends up being tech-house/all-in-house. As a little extra, its a vinyl only mix. That means no traktor, no mp3's, just wax.

Hi everyone

first of all, sorry for not being that active lately! i simply haven't had enough time on my hands. I missed a couple of radio shows, and this mixtape is quite late. There should not be any problems the next weeks tho. I will play tomorrow on MCJ and thursday on kaosradio.

I also did this new mixtape some days ago. It is a tad more danceable and uptempo than my last mixes, but i guess it's because the summer is on its way. It isn't technical mix i've done tho, i have not been on the decks for a while. I did like the outcome a lot, there are a lot of good tracks in the mix.

Radio shows this week

Ok, so the merging between Motor City Jam and Kaos Radio haven't been completed just yet. This means i'll play at both station untill we've come to some kind of agreement.
I'm playing every tuesday 20-21.30 (GMT) on MCJ, and thursdays 20-22 (GMT) on kaos radio.

I wont be able to play this thursday though, since i'm going to do something secret. i'll reveal it to you in a week or two.. This means i'm playing this wednesday 20-22 (GMT) instead.
